Trademark Application for “Samsung Galaxy Gear” Reveals Future of Tech
Orange County – South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. has given the world a glimpse of its plans for future high-tech products with its new trademark application for “Samsung Galaxy Gear.”
The application, filed on an intent-to-use basis, was assigned U.S. Trademark serial no. 86/022,079. Samsung filed the application on July 29 for use in relation to “wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch,” among other goods.
Samsung has also filed a trademark application for “Samsung Gear” in South Korea.
These trademark applications follow a series of design patents approved by the South Korean Patent Office for Samsung. The patents feature components of a wristwatch with a flexible, curved screen with internet connection and ability to make phone calls. The drawings in the patent application include a speaker and a physical power button on the side of the screen.
Samsung’s potential smart watch is just one of many announced by different companies to be in development this year. California-based Apple, Inc. is rumored to be developing a watch as well, and has applied for a trademark in Japan for iWatch. Sony Electronics, Inc. has also introduced a product called Smartwatch 2 as an accessory for its Xperia smartphone.
Despite the recent flurry of activity by Samsung relating to its smart watch, there is no guarantee that a product like this will make it to the shelves. Tech companies routinely file for trademark and patent protection for products that do not reach production.
Samsung also has the option to limit the goods listed on its trademark application for “Samsung Galaxy Gear” to include only the cell phones and accessories that are already available.
The company will have ample time to consider revisions to its trademark application, as the South Korean Trademark Office has a waiting list for applications that will prevent consideration of the trademark for seven to eight months. Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is expected to move more swiftly.
Samsung is currently the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, selling more than twice as many units as its nearest competitor.
